Macro Consultants is a project management and consulting firm based in Brooklyn, NY. Macro has a team of 12 professionals who spend most of their time at clients' sites (in the tri-state area) and are rarely at Macro's Brooklyn office. Furthermore, Macro does many different types of work for their clients, including cost control, construction management, and legal documentation, and most projects are billed in a unique fashion, such as flat-fee or at special hourly rates.

By February 2007, Macro was expanding and was having growing pains. The first was that they needed a way for their users to be able to enter their time directly, rather than into Excel spreadsheets which they would e-mail in once a week for the bookkeeper to collect and enter. Another was that they needed a more efficient way to bill their clients - something better than manually typing up invoices in Quickbooks, calculating hourly or flat fee rates, and hoping that everything was getting billed correctly. Lastly, Macro's Principals needed a way to keep on top of all of their projects without having to be CC'd on every e-mail or check-in with the project managers as well as make sure that everyone was properly billing for all of their time.
